Celebrate the Earth with us this month!

April: the month of Earth Day (although in our minds, every day should be Earth Day). This month, WBST has three great tours for those interested in getting back to nature and learning about the interconnectedness of our coast.

1. Rich Inlet Birding Expedition- This is your chance to see pristine Rich Inlet before the threat of hard structure development changes it forever. Wrightsville Beach Scenic Tours guides a birding expedition to Hutaff Island. Hutaff Island is an Audubon-managed Bird Sanctuary Island, located north of Rich’s Inlet and Figure Eight Island. Visitors to Hutaff island will have the opportunity to observe several shorebirds, most notably the Piping Plover, foraging on sand shoals. Come spend a day birding one of the last untouched barrier Islands in the southeast, and experience first hand the diverse wildlife that inhabit this pristine natural treasure. Species of Interest include the Piping Plover, Common Tern, Hooded Merganser, and Western Sandpiper.

2. Birding tour on Masonboro Island- Spring is a time of migration, and the best place to see the marvelous birds we have on our coast is from the deck of our boat. See Least Terns, American Oystercatchers, and Marbled Godwits, as well as pelicans, cormorants, and gulls. Let our experienced captain guide you through the fascinating world of shorebirds.

3. Crabbing- Get your hands dirty and your feet wet with our new crabbing option. Explore the salt marsh and use a hand line and a dip net to catch the crustaceans that lurk beneath the surface. Learn to tell the difference between males and females, and between blue crabs and stone crabs. This option is great for kids. Crabs are an important part of the ecology of the salt marsh, and this is your chance to get up close and personal.
